presented his first social encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, calling for
the “disarmament” of artificial intelligence and urging the global community to
ensure that technological progress remains at the service of human dignity,
solidarity, and the common good.<o:p></o:p>

Addressing participants gathered in the Synod Hall at the
Vatican, the Holy Father described the rapid development of artificial
intelligence as an “epochal turning point” comparable to the Industrial
Revolution confronted by Pope Leo XIII during the publication of Rerum
Novarum in 1891. He noted that artificial intelligence is already shaping
human coexistence and is even transforming the nature of warfare.<o:p></o:p>

Drawing a parallel with Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIV
explained that the Church today is called to interpret the “new things” of the
modern technological age in the light of the Gospel and the dignity of the
human person. The encyclical emerged from extensive consultations with
scientists, engineers, educators, political leaders, and families concerned
about the future impact of artificial intelligence on society and younger
generations.<o:p></o:p>

The Pope expressed deep concern over the growing use of
autonomous weapons systems and algorithms capable of denying healthcare,
employment, and security on the basis of unjust or prejudiced data. Stressing
the seriousness of the situation, he declared that “artificial intelligence
needs to be disarmed,” warning against technologies driven by domination,
exclusion, and death.<o:p></o:p>

Recalling the Church’s longstanding support for nuclear
disarmament, Pope Leo XIV insisted that every major technological advancement
must be accompanied by moral discernment and public accountability. He warned
that peace itself is endangered whenever technology weakens humanity’s moral
vigilance and critical judgment.<o:p></o:p>

Reflecting on his missionary experience in Peru during the
devastating floods of 2017, the Pope emphasized that rebuilding society
involves restoring trust, hope, and human relationships. Referring to the
biblical example of Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem, he described artificial
intelligence as a potential “construction site of history” where technological
progress can serve humanity within a horizon of communion and fraternity.<o:p></o:p>

The Holy Father strongly affirmed that no human person
should ever be reduced to productivity, cognitive performance, or mere data. He
reiterated that every person possesses freedom, interiority, and a vocation to
love and worship that no machine can replace.<o:p></o:p>

Pope Leo XIV also called for international cooperation among
governments, institutions, technology developers, and communities most affected
by technological systems to ensure that advances in artificial intelligence
benefit the entire human family rather than only a privileged few.<o:p></o:p>

Concluding his address, the Pope invited believers and
non-believers alike to become “artisans of hope” and work together towards
building a more human and fraternal society rooted in what he described as a “civilization

Secretary of the CBCI Council for Women, who passed away on 23 May 2026.<o:p></o:p>

Sr. Lilly Francis served as the Executive Secretary of the
CBCI Commission/Council for Women from 2004 to 2011 and dedicated her life
wholeheartedly to the empowerment, dignity, and leadership of women in the
Church and society.<o:p></o:p>

Remembering her remarkable contribution, the Council noted
that Sr. Lilly Francis rendered exemplary service through her visionary
leadership, commitment to gender justice, legal awareness, and grassroots
empowerment initiatives. She played a pivotal role in promoting the CBCI Gender
Policy and strengthening women’s participation within the Church.<o:p></o:p>

Through her writings, seminars, advocacy efforts, and
formation programmes, she inspired and empowered thousands of women across
India. Her commitment, simplicity, wisdom, and missionary zeal touched the
lives of countless women religious and lay faithful.<o:p></o:p>

The Council stated that it remains deeply indebted to her
tireless service, guidance, and pioneering efforts in advancing the mission of

Labour, elected its new office bearers for the term 2026–2028 during its Annual
General Body Meeting (AGBM) held at Subodhana, Bengaluru, on 18–19 May 2026.<o:p></o:p>

The AGBM was inaugurated by Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado,
Archbishop of Bangalore. In his inaugural address, Archbishop Machado
emphasized the urgent need to organize unorganized workers, especially
agricultural labourers, domestic workers, and migrant workers across states. He
stressed the importance of empowering workers at the grassroots level and
invoked God’s blessings upon the newly elected team.<o:p></o:p>

Mr. Anthony Selvanathan, President of WIF, presided over the

CBCI Workers India Federation Elects New Office Bearers for 2026–2028 

New Delhi, 19 May 2026, CBCI: The newly appointed
office bearers of the CBCI Office for SC/BC, led by Chairman Most Rev. Jaya Rao
Polimera along with member bishops Most Rev. Peter Rumal Kharadi and Most Rev.
Varghese Ephraim, made their maiden visit to the national office in New Delhi
on 14–15 May 2026. The visit served as an important occasion for the new
leadership to gain a deeper understanding of the concerns of Dalit Christians,
especially the case pending before the Supreme Court of India, and to review
the activities and mission of the Commission.<o:p></o:p>

On the first day, a consultation meeting was organised with
stakeholders and Supreme Court advocates engaged in the legal struggle for
justice on behalf of Dalit Christians. The delegation first met senior advocate
Prashant Bhushan, the main petitioner in Writ Petition (CWP 180/2004), at his
office. He briefed the bishops on the present status of the case, explained
recent legal developments, and clarified the broader context of the
proceedings. The interaction provided valuable orientation to the new office
bearers regarding the legal dimensions of the Dalit Christian issue.<o:p></o:p>

Later in the evening, a meeting with the advocates handling
the case in the Supreme Court was held at the CBCI Conference Hall. The session
began with a prayer led by Rt. Rev. Jaya Rao Polimera, Bishop of Eluru Diocese
and Chairman of the CBCI Office for SC/BC. Fr. Vijay Kumar Nayak, Secretary of
the Office, welcomed the new office bearers and felicitated them with shawls
and flower bouquets before explaining the purpose of the gathering.<o:p></o:p>

During the meeting, a recent Supreme Court judgment in the
case of Chinthada Anand versus State of Andhra Pradesh was presented and
discussed. The advocates explained its implications and clarified how the
judgment differed from the main Dalit Christian case currently pending before

The gathering was enriched by the presence of Hon’ble
District Judge Ramulu Dunna, who served as resource person and guide. He

Christians within the Church and society and expressed their commitment to work
for the empowerment of Dalit Christians and other marginalised communities.<o:p></o:p>

Hon’ble District Judge Ramulu Dunna also offered important
legal insights after presenting a comprehensive study of judgments related to
Dalit issues and the pending Supreme Court case. He suggested several important
measures for strengthening the Commission and advancing its mission in a
systematic manner. These included establishing a legal cell at the national
office with a dedicated team of committed advocates, building constructive
engagement with secular-minded political leaders and parties to raise the issue
in Parliament, and identifying members of the judiciary who studied in
Christian institutions to explore avenues of outreach and engagement.<o:p></o:p>

Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the tragic
ambush on two vehicles carrying church leaders of the Thadou Baptist
Association (TBA) between Kotzim and Kotlen villages in Kangpokpi district of
Manipur on May 13, 2026. The attack claimed innocent lives and left several
others injured.<o:p></o:p>

In a statement issued today, the CBCI strongly condemned the
heinous act committed against religious leaders who have remained a vital
source of hope and strength amid the prolonged social unrest in the region. The
Conference noted that violence only deepens wounds, prolongs suffering, and
weakens the bonds that unite communities.<o:p></o:p>

Echoing the sentiments expressed by Most Rev. Dr. Linus
Neli, Archbishop of Imphal, the CBCI made a sincere appeal to all concerned to

CBCI Expresses Profound Grief Over Tragic Killing of Baptist Leaders in Manipur

New Delhi, May 08, 2026, CBCI: The National
Federation of Churches in India (NFCI) was formally launched during the Fourth
National Ecumenical Bishops’ Fellowship Meeting held at St. John’s National
Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS), Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone
in the ecumenical journey and unity of Churches in India.<o:p></o:p>

The decision to establish the NFCI emerged from the growing
concern among Christian Churches in India over the critical challenges
currently faced by the Christian community, including violent attacks on
pastors and faithful, stringent anti-conversion laws in several States, and
attempts to take over Church properties through amendments to the Foreign
Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and proposals such as Christian Welfare /
Property Boards.<o:p></o:p>

Recognizing the urgent need for a united and collective
response, Church leaders and representatives resolved to create a national
ecumenical platform that would represent the Churches in India with one united
voice. After nearly two years of consultations, deliberations, and drafting of
guidelines, the NFCI was officially launched following the approval and
adoption of its Guidelines during the Fellowship Meeting.<o:p></o:p>

The NFCI aims to function as a national ecumenical body of
Churches, serving as an umbrella organisation and apex body for Christians in
India. It seeks to foster visible unity among member Churches while respecting
their individual identities, traditions, and ecclesiastical structures. The
Federation will also address matters of common concern affecting Churches and
the Christian community across the country.<o:p></o:p>

Although several national-level Church forums and councils
already exist, Church leaders noted the absence of a comprehensive and
inclusive all-India platform that brings together Bishops and Heads of Churches

Around 45 participants attended the Fellowship Meeting,
including Archbishops, Bishops, Church Heads, and delegates representing
various Christian denominations. The gathering began with an Ecumenical Prayer
Service for Christian Unity adapted from the 2026 Resources for the Week of
Prayer for Christian Unity, jointly prepared by the Dicastery for Promoting
Christian Unity of the Roman Catholic Church and the Commission on Faith and
Order of the World Council of Churches (WCC).<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Anthony Poola, Archbishop of Hyderabad and
President of the CBCI, delivered the welcome address. He underlined the
pressing concerns faced by the Christian community and stressed the importance

Third National Ecumenical Bishops’ Fellowship Meeting held on September 11,

The newly formed NFCI is expected to serve as a national

XIV has appointed Rev. Vijaya Paul Reddy Duggimpudi, currently serving as the
Diocesan Administrator of Warangal, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of
Warangal.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Vijaya Paul Reddy Duggimpudi was born on 8 January 1965
in Manugonda, in the Warangal district of Telangana. He pursued his studies in
Philosophy and Theology at St. John’s Major Seminary, Hyderabad, from 1985 to
1987 and from 1988 to 1991. During the same period, he completed a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Osmania University (1987–1990).<o:p></o:p>

He later obtained a Master of Arts degree from Osmania
University (1996–1998), along with a Bachelor of Education and a Master of
Education from Annamalai University (1995–1996; 1998–1999).<o:p></o:p>

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Warangal on 2
April 1992. Over the years, Bishop-designate Duggimpudi has served the Church
in various pastoral, educational, and administrative capacities. His
assignments include Assistant Parish Priest and Hostel Director at St. Joseph’s
Church in the Diocese of Khammam (1992–1993); in charge of the PIME Regional
House and Director of St. Xavier’s Hostel in the Diocese of Eluru (1993–1995);
Parish Priest of Devagripatnam Parish in Warangal (1995–2002); Director and
Legal Representative of Fatima College for Education in Warangal (2002–2009);
Parish Priest of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Velair (2009–2015); Director of
the Lodi Multipurpose Social Service Society in Warangal (2015–2023); and
Director of the Christu Jyothi Institute of Technology and Science in Warangal
(2023–2025).<o:p></o:p>

Since 2025, he has been serving as the Diocesan
Administrator of the Diocese of Warangal. His appointment as Bishop marks a
significant moment for the local Church in Telangana as he assumes the pastoral

CBCI Congratulates Winners of Recent Assembly Elections; Appeals For Constitutional Integrity And Inclusive Governance

expresses deep anguish over the Times of India’s Report (1 May 2026) on SC verdict
which permits the forced premature delivery of a 30-week viable foetus. This development
raises profound questions relating to Constitutional law, medical ethics, and the
fundamental right to life of the unborn child.<o:p></o:p>

The order directs the All India Institute
of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to terminate a 30-week pregnancy of a 15-year-old
minor. This direction stands in stark contrast to the unanimous and categorical
opinion of the medical experts, who have clearly stated that termination at this
advanced stage is not medically feasible.<o:p></o:p>

Importantly, the medical board suggested
a safer and more humane alternative - deferring delivery by a few weeks to enable
a normal birth. This approach would significantly reduce health risks to the minor
and increase the likelihood of delivering a healthy child. The State also expressed
its willingness to assume responsibility for the child, including facilitating adoption.
Despite this, the order prioritizes “choice” over well-established medical advice
and ethical considerations.<o:p></o:p>

At 30 weeks of gestation, a fetus is
widely recognized as viable and capable of survival outside the womb. Directing
a procedure that may end such life or result in severe harm raises serious concerns
under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees the right to life.
The termination of a viable fetus, particularly when safer alternatives exist, calls
into question the balance between autonomy and the protection of life.<o:p></o:p>

While patient autonomy is an important
principle, it cannot extend to demanding a medically contraindicated and harmful
procedure. Judicial&nbsp; decisions in such sensitive
medico-legal matters must be guided by scientific evidence and expert opinion. Overriding

district of the Diocese of Kottar, Bishop Varuvel completed his schooling in
Nagercoil in 1965 and his Pre-University Course at Scott Christian College,
Nagercoil. He joined St. Aloysius Minor Seminary, Nagercoil (1968–1970) as a
candidate for the Diocese of Kottar.<o:p></o:p>

He pursued philosophical studies at Sacred Heart Seminary,
Poonamallee, Chennai (1970–1973), and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics
from Arulanadar College, Karumathur (1973–1976). He joined the Salesians in
1977 and made his first profession on 24 May 1978.<o:p></o:p>

He completed his theological studies at the Salesian
Pontifical University (1981–1985) and was ordained a priest by St. John Paul II
on 2 June 1985 at the Vatican.<o:p></o:p>

Following his priestly ordination, he earned a Master’s
degree in Pedagogy from the Salesian Pontifical University before returning to
India.<o:p></o:p>

In the Chennai Province of the Salesians, he served as Vice
Rector and Rector at various seminaries from 1986 to 2001. He was Provincial
Councillor for two years from 2001 and later served as Director of the
Educational Ministry of the Chennai Province from 2003 to 2010. In 2010, he was
appointed Director of Don Bosco Mission at Thalavadi and also served as Master
of Novices.<o:p></o:p>

fundraising activities, stating that such actions violate her principles and

and Nepal since March 13, 2021, faithfully accompanying the life and mission of
the Church in the region during his five-year tenure.<o:p></o:p>

Born on March 13, 1953, in Predore (Bergamo), Italy,
Archbishop Girelli was ordained a priest on June 17, 1978. He holds a Doctorate
in Theology and entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on July 13,
1987.<o:p></o:p>

During his diplomatic career, he served in several Apostolic
Nunciatures around the world, including in Cameroon, New Zealand, and the
United States. He also worked in the Section for General Affairs of the
Secretariat of State of the Holy See.<o:p></o:p>

He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia on April 13,
2006, and later, on October 10, 2006, Apostolic Nuncio to East Timor. On
January 13, 2011, he was further entrusted with the offices of Apostolic Nuncio
to Singapore, Apostolic Delegate to Malaysia and Brunei, and non-resident
Pontifical Representative to Vietnam.<o:p></o:p>

Later, on September 13, 2017, he was appointed Apostolic

Conference of India (CBCI) has issued an urgent circular calling for nationwide
prayers and spiritual solidarity for peace as the escalating war in the Middle
East continues to cause immense suffering among civilians.<o:p></o:p>

In the circular, His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Poola,
President of the CBCI and Archbishop of Hyderabad, appealed to all Cardinals,
Archbishops, Bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful across India to
intensify prayer and acts of penance for peace.<o:p></o:p>

The CBCI expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict,
noting that innocent civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence. Families
have been displaced, children are growing up amid fear and uncertainty, and
essential institutions such as places of worship and hospitals have not been

sweeping call for a "fast from words that wound" in his official
message for Lent 2026. Released ahead of Ash Wednesday, the document titled
“Listening and Fasting: Lent as a Time of Conversion” challenges the global
Catholic community to move beyond traditional dietary restrictions and focus on
"disarming" their daily language.

The Pontiff identifies the misuse of speech as a primary
barrier to authentic relationships, specifically urging the faithful to refrain
from harsh judgments, gossip, and slander. He noted that this "linguistic
fasting" is particularly critical in modern spaces such as social media
and political debates, where he said words of hatred must give way to words of
hope and peace.Beyond the focus on speech, the Pope emphasized that Lent
should serve as a period to place the mystery of God back at the center of life.
He described fasting as a physical exercise that helps individuals recognize
their deeper hunger for justice, while defining listening as the first

New Delhi, 14 February 2026, CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV
has appointed Rev. Francisco Antonio Agnelo Jacinto Pinheiro, of the clergy of
the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of
Sindhudurg. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Professor at the
Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, Goa.<o:p></o:p>

Rev. Francisco Antonio Agnelo Jacinto Pinheiro was born on
July 6, 1972, in Raia, Goa. He pursued his philosophical and theological
formation at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol from 1991 to 1993 and from 1996
to 2000. In the interim, he completed a degree in Psychology at Goa University
(1993–1996).<o:p></o:p>

He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Goa and
Daman on October 28, 2000. Following his ordination, he served as Assistant
Pastor at St. Alex Church, Calangute from 2000 to 2001.<o:p></o:p>

He later obtained a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the
Jnana Deepa Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Pune (2002–2004). From 2013
to 2016, he pursued doctoral studies in Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian
University, Rome, earning a Doctorate in Philosophy.<o:p></o:p>

From 2022 to 2023, he served as Administrator of St. Joseph
Church, Dramapur. Since 2017, he has been serving as Professor of Philosophy at

Cardinal Poola Anthony, Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad, has been elected
as the new President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) during
its 37th General Body Meeting held on February 7, 2026.<o:p></o:p>

Cardinal Poola Anthony was born on November 15, 1961, in
Poluru in the Diocese of Kurnool. After completing his formation at the minor
seminary in Nuzvid, he pursued priestly studies at Saint Peter’s Pontifical
Seminary, Bengaluru. He was ordained a priest on February 20, 1992, and
incardinated into the Diocese of Cuddapah.<o:p></o:p>

In the initial years of his priestly ministry, he served as
parish vicar at Saint Mary’s Cathedral (1992–1993) and Amagampalli (1993–1994),
followed by pastoral service as parish priest in Tekurpet (1994–1995), Badvel
(1995–2000), and Veerapalli (2000–2001). From 2001 to 2003, he pursued higher
studies in the United States, earning a master’s degree in pastoral care and
attending a theology course at Loyola University, Chicago, while offering
pastoral ministry at Saint Genevieve Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago.<o:p></o:p>

From 2004 to 2008, Cardinal Poola Anthony served as Director
of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. He also held several key
responsibilities in the Diocese of Cuddapah, including diocesan consultor,
Secretary for Education, Deputy Administrator of diocesan schools, and
coordinator of the Sponsorship Program.<o:p></o:p>

He was appointed Bishop of Kurnool on February 8, 2008, and
was consecrated on April 19, 2008. On November 19, 2020, Pope Francis appointed
him Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad. He was created and proclaimed
cardinal by Pope Francis during the Consistory held on August 27, 2022, and was
assigned the titular church of Ss. Protomartiri a Via Aurelia Antica.<o:p></o:p>

mission, and the Church’s engagement with the nation, as Archbishop Andrews
Thazhath, CBCI President, was the main celebrant of the Holy Eucharist.<o:p></o:p>

In his homily, Archbishop Thazhath underlined that the unity
of the early Christian community was not merely organizational but deeply
Eucharistic. Sharing one faith, one hope, and one breaking of the bread, he
said, enabled believers to share their lives, resources, and mission, leading
naturally to common witness and common action. Drawing a parallel, he noted
that the Catholic Church in India - Latin, Syro-Malabar, and Syro-Malankara - is
called to be “one heart and one soul,” adding that the CBCI is not just an
administrative body but a living symbol of Eucharistic communion where
diversity of rites enriches unity in Christ.<o:p></o:p>

Immediately after the Holy Mass, Archbishop Thazhath blessed
and inaugurated St. John’s Jubilee Park. All participants of the CBCI General
Body Meeting took part in the ceremony.<o:p></o:p>

The plenary sessions that followed addressed pressing
concerns of the Christian community in India. Mr. Shaji Joseph, journalist,
presented the ground reality faced by Christians, while Mr. Joel Singh spoke on
the all-India situation of Christians. Senior Supreme Court lawyer Mr. P. J.
Jose highlighted the challenges ahead. The session was moderated by Archbishop
John Moolachira.<o:p></o:p>

Reports were also presented by the National Vocation Service
Centre (NVSC), the National Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre
(NBCLC), the CBCI Office for Environment and Climate Change, and the Catholic

In the afternoon, the bishops were divided into 12 groups
for in-depth discussions on various themes connected to the main theme of the

Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, by His Grace Archbishop Leopoldo
Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. Held under the theme “Faith
and the Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision,” the
gathering resonates deeply with the CBCI motto “United in Witness.”
Rooted in the Gospel and inspired by the love of Christ, the CBCI continues its
mission of strengthening faith, fostering unity among India’s diverse
communities, and promoting justice, peace, and harmony in society. More than
200 bishops from 174 dioceses across the country have assembled for prayer,
reflection, and deliberation on matters of national and ecclesial significance.<o:p></o:p></a>

The General Body
Meeting commenced at 9.00 a.m. with a solemn Eucharistic Celebration, during
which Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of the CBCI, welcomed
the participants. The principal celebrant, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, in his
homily, called upon the bishops to be the light and salt of the earth, filled
with the fruits of the Holy Spirit. He urged the shepherds of the Church to be
joyful, kind, faithful, and humble servants in the Lord’s mission, witnessing
Christ’s human love through outreach to the poor and the marginalized. The
Eucharist was concelebrated by senior Church leaders, including Archbishop Mar
Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI; Cardinal Filip Neri Ferrao President of

Archbishop George Antonysamy read out the message of the Holy Father, Pope Leo
XIV. In his inaugural address, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli conveyed the

in the Preamble of the Constitution of India resonate deeply with the Church’s
social teachings. He noted that even amid contemporary challenges, the Church

Presidential Address, Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath stated that the Church

be missionaries of hope and empowerment. Referring to emerging technologies,
particularly Artificial Intelligence, he emphasized the need to humanize

The Biennial Report
of the CBCI, covering the period from February 2024 to January 2026, was
presented by Archbishop Anil J. T. Couto. On the occasion, thirty-one newly
appointed bishops were felicitated by the Apostolic Nuncio with a shawl and
memento, followed by a solemn moment of silence in remembrance of the bishops

The General Body Meeting will be held under the theme “Faith

The assembly will begin on Wednesday, February 4, with the
Inaugural Holy Eucharist at 9:00 a.m. at St. John’s Auditorium. His Excellency

The theme of the General Body Meeting, “Faith and the
Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision,” resonates
deeply with the CBCI’s motto, “United in Witness.” Rooted in the Gospel and
inspired by the love of Christ, the CBCI continues its mission of strengthening
faith, fostering unity among India’s diverse communities, and promoting
justice, peace, and harmony in society.<o:p></o:p>

The Inaugural Holy Eucharist on 4 February will be presided
over by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, who
will also deliver the Inaugural Address during the opening ceremony at St.
John’s Auditorium. The Presidential Address will be delivered by Archbishop
Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

During the week-long meeting, the bishops will engage in
in-depth discussions on the chosen theme, examining its ecclesial, social, and
political relevance, particularly in the current context marked by challenges
to constitutional values and increasing concerns over attacks on Christian
communities in different parts of the country.<o:p></o:p>

The 37th CBCI General Body Meeting is being meticulously
prepared under the guidance of the leadership of the CBCI especially Rev. Dr. Mathew
Koyickal, Deputy secretary General CBCI, with active collaboration from various
CBCI offices and commissions and, along with the support of the officials of St.
John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, an institution managed by the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.<o:p></o:p>

Calling upon the faithful across the nation, Archbishop
Andrews Thazhath has urged Catholics throughout India to pray for the
successful and fruitful conduct of the General Body Meeting, that it may
strengthen the Church’s witness to faith, unity, and the constitutional values

<div>New Delhi, January 31, 2026 CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Udupi submitted by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo, in accordance with Canon 401 §1 of the Code of Canon Law.</div><div> </div><div>Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo was born on November 12, 1949, at Agrar, a small town in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. He was ordained a priest on May 5, 1977, for the Diocese of Mangalore. In the early years of his priestly ministry, he served as Assistant Parish Priest and Parish Priest in various parishes of the Diocese of Mangalore.</div><div> </div><div>Subsequently, Bishop Lobo was appointed Director of the “CODP” and later entrusted with the responsibility of Episcopal Vicar of Kasaragod in Kerala. On March 20, 2000, he was ordained Bishop of the Diocese of Shivamoga by Archbishop Ignatius Paul Pinto of the Archdiocese of Bangalore.</div><div> </div><div>After shepherding the Diocese of Shivamoga for 13 years, he was appointed as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Udupi, where he provided dedicated pastoral leadership since its establishment.At present, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo serves as the Chairman of the CBCI National Office for Justice, Peace and Development.</div><div> </div><div>The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India expresses its gratitude for his devoted service to the Church and prays for God’s continued blessings upon him as he steps down from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Udupi.</div><div> </div>

<div>New Delhi, January 31, 2026 CBCI: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rev. Leslie Clifford D’Souza, a priest of the Diocese of Udupi, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Udupi.</div><div> </div><div>Rev. D’Souza currently serves as the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva, Udupi. Born on August 19, 1962, in Uchila (Yermal), Udupi Taluk, Karnataka, he was ordained a priest on May 10, 1990.</div><div> </div><div>He completed his seminary formation at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore (1982–1985), and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome (1986–1990). He also holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Mysore and a Diploma in Depth Psychology and Formation from the Institute for Psychology and Formation, Bangalore. Furthering his academic pursuits, he earned a Licentiate in Theology from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and completed his Ph.D. in Moral Theology at the same university between 1997 and 2003.</div><div> </div><div>Following his priestly ordination, Rev. D’Souza served as Assistant Parish Priest at Holy Rosary Church, Kundapur, Udupi (1990–1992), and at Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar, Mangalore (1992–1995). From 2003 to 2010, he was a Professor of Moral Theology at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore.</div><div> </div><div>He later served as Parish Priest of St. John the Evangelist Church, Pangla (2010–2017), and Our Lady of Rosary Church, Kallianpur (2017–2022). From 2022 to 2025, he was the Secretary of the Council of Priests and also served as an Advocate of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Diocese of Udupi. Since 2022, he has been the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva.</div><div> </div><div>In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Bishop-designate D’Souza is the Vicar Forane of the Shirva Deanery, Udupi, and a Member of the College of Consultors.</div><div> </div>

Pope Leo XIV Appoints Rev. Leslie Clifford D’Souza as Bishop of Udupi

New Delhi, 25 January 2026, CBCI: Mar Dominic Kokkat,
C.S.T., the founding Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Gorakhpur in Uttar
Pradesh, passed away on Sunday, 25 January 2026. He was 93. Funeral
arrangements will be announced later.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 23 February 1932 at Vaikom in Kerala, he was
baptized as Joseph and joined the Little Flower Congregation (C.S.T.) in 1953,
taking the religious name Dominic. He received his major seminary formation and
theological studies at the Papal Seminary, Kandy (Sri Lanka), and in Pune, and
was ordained a priest on 4 October 1960.<o:p></o:p>

During his priestly ministry, Mar Dominic Kokkat served his
congregation in several key roles, including Vice Rector of the C.S.T.
Philosophical Seminary, Alwaye; Principal of the Technical School, Alwaye; and
Mission Superior of the C.S.T. Mission in Punjab. He also served as Assistant
Secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), New Delhi, from
1978 to 1982. He held a Diploma in Social Work from the Coady International
Institute, Canada.<o:p></o:p>

On 4 October 1984, he was ordained the first Bishop of the
newly established Diocese of Gorakhpur and was formally installed on 14 October
1984. Known for his deep concern for the poor and the marginalized, he
initiated several pastoral and social apostolates in the diocese, enabling the
downtrodden and neglected to find dignity and a rightful place in society.<o:p></o:p>

Inspired by St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the charism
of his congregation, he founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of St.
Thérèse (LST) in 1988. After shepherding the Diocese of Gorakhpur with
dedication and zeal, he became Bishop Emeritus in 2006.<o:p></o:p>

New Delhi, 24 January 2026, CBCI: &nbsp;Mar Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop of Thrissur
and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), has lodged a
formal complaint with the Commissioner of Police, Thrissur City, regarding a
serious case of cyber fraud and identity misuse.<o:p></o:p>

In his complaint, Archbishop Thazhath stated that unknown
individuals are fraudulently using his photograph while impersonating him under
different names and falsely claiming to hold senior positions such as Secretary
General or heads of offices associated with the CBCI. These impersonators have
reportedly been contacting priests, seminarians, religious, politicians, and
members of the general public.<o:p></o:p>

According to the complaint, the nature of these fraudulent
communications varies. In several instances, recipients were asked to share OTP
numbers received on their mobile phones. In other cases, they were invited to
join video conference links under the pretext of discussing CBCI-related
matters. There have also been reports of financial assistance being solicited
in the name of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

Archbishop Thazhath categorically clarified that neither he
nor his office, nor any authorised office of the CBCI, has initiated or
approved such calls, messages, video conference links, or requests for
financial assistance. He noted that these acts amount to deliberate
impersonation, deception, and potential cyber fraud, causing serious confusion,
reputational damage, and posing risks to the safety and trust of the public.<o:p></o:p>

He further informed the police that the frequency of such
incidents is increasing and has attached screenshots of calls received by his
acquaintances as evidence.<o:p></o:p>

Seeking urgent intervention, the CBCI President requested
the police to register the complaint, conduct a thorough investigation,
identify those responsible, and take appropriate legal action to prevent
further misuse of identity and protect the public from being deceived.<o:p></o:p>

New Delhi, 22 January 2026, CBCI: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has strongly condemned the heinous attack on a Christian pastor in Odisha, describing the incident as a grave act of violence and humiliation that strikes at the core of human dignity and religious freedom.The CBCI expressed deep anguish over reports that the pastor was forcibly made to eat cow dung, calling it an inhuman act that not only degrades an individual but also targets his faith. Such acts, the bishops said, have no place in a civilized and democratic society.Demanding immediate and stringent action, the CBCI urged the authorities to identify and punish the perpetrators without delay and to ensure justice for the victim. The Conference affirmed its solidarity with the pastor and reiterated its commitment to standing with all victims of violence and discrimination.<o:p></o:p>Appealing for peace and harmony, the CBCI called upon citizens across the country to reject violence in all its forms and to work together to uphold mutual respect, fraternity, and the constitutional values of India.<o:p></o:p>&nbsp;
