Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on the afternoon of June 12. The London-bound flight was
carrying 242 passengers and crew when it went down, sending shockwaves across
the nation.<o:p></o:p>

In a press statement issued from New Delhi,
the CBCI conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their
lives in the devastating incident. “Our prayers are with them in this hour of
immense grief and loss,” the statement read. The bishops also offered prayers
for the speedy and full recovery of those injured in the crash and acknowledged
the ongoing efforts of rescue personnel at the site.<o:p></o:p>

same Diocese, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Jullundur. <o:p></o:p>Rev. Jose Sebastian Thekkumcherikunnel was
born on December 24, 1962, in Kalaketty of the Diocese of Palai, Kerala and was
ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Jullundur on May 1, 1991.&nbsp;After his minor seminary formation in
Trichur (1978-1982), he then pursued philosophical and theological studies at
St. Charles Inter-Diocesan Major Seminary in Nagpur. He earned a Licentiate in
Canon Law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.After his priestly ordination in 1991, he
developed his priestly ministry in different places and in different capacities
in the Diocese of Jullundur. Among other roles he has been Member of the

Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has officially appointed Fr M Julian
Fernando as the new Administrator of Caritas India. The announcement was made
during the 149th Standing Committee meeting of the CBCI.<o:p></o:p>

&nbsp;Born in 1970, Fr Julian Fernando was
ordained a priest of the Diocese of Varanasi in 2000. He holds a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Philosophy and a Master’s degree in History from Madurai Kamaraj
University, Tamil Nadu, as well as a Master of Social Work from Loyola College,
Chennai.

&nbsp;Fr Fernando began his priestly ministry as
Assistant Parish Priest at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Varanasi. Over the years, he
has served in various capacities including Secretary of the Prison Ministry and
Assistant Director of the Social Welfare Society in the Diocese of Varanasi.
His experience extends to roles such as Director of CBR Programs in Uttar
Pradesh, Manager of Amar Vani School for the Hearing-Impaired in Mau, Secretary
of the Society for Handicapped in Varanasi, and since 2018, Director of the Social
Welfare Society in the Diocese of Varanasi.

Fr M Julian Fernando Appointed Administrator of Caritas India 

New Delhi, June 1, 2025, CBCI:&nbsp; The official declaration of the Vatican’s
recognition of the Eucharistic sign at Christ the King Parish, Vilakkannur, in
the Indian state of Kerala, took place on Saturday, May 31, 2025. Archbishop
Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Archbishop Joseph Pamplany of
the Archdiocese of Tellicherry, presided over the ceremonies, which included
the reading of the official declaration and the exposition of the miraculous
host for public veneration.<o:p></o:p>

The events leading to the declaration began
on November 13, 2013, at Christ the King Church in Vilakkannur, during morning
Holy Mass. The then-parish priest, Fr. Thomas Pathikkal, was celebrating the
Holy Qurbana when he noticed the Holy Face of Jesus manifesting itself on the
Eucharistic host. He immediately placed the Eucharist in a monstrance and
concluded the Mass.<o:p></o:p>

What followed were years of study and
deliberation. The miraculous host was initially relocated to the Archbishop’s
House in Thalassery by order of then Archbishop Mar George Valiyamattam. A
doctrinal commission, including Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, Mar George
Njaralakkatt, and Mar Joseph Arumachadath, was appointed by Cardinal George
Alencherry, then-Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, to begin an
official ecclesiastical investigation.<o:p></o:p>

Subsequently, a special committee of
theological and scientific experts was tasked with an in-depth study of the
event. The report, submitted on December 21, 2013, acknowledged the
significance of the apparition.<o:p></o:p>

In 2018, the host was sent to Rome via the
Apostolic Nuncio for further analysis, as only the Vatican’s Congregation for
the Doctrine of the Faith could provide an official confirmation of the
miracle. Nearly a decade later, the host was returned to India for additional
examination.<o:p></o:p>

Christ University in Bangalore was selected
to carry out three key scientific procedures to evaluate the credibility of the
event. The tests - Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis,
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, and Mass Spectrometry - concluded that
there were no external materials or signs of tampering. The chemical makeup of
the image was found to be consistent with the rest of the host, supporting the
miraculous nature of the event.<o:p></o:p>

A comprehensive report detailing the
findings was submitted to the Vatican on April 2, 2024. Nearly a year later, on
March 19, 2025, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith formally
declared that there was no canonical obstacle to recognizing the Vilakkannur
Eucharistic phenomenon as an extraordinary occurrence.<o:p></o:p>

This declaration was read aloud by
Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli during the Holy Mass at Christ the King Church in
Vilakkannur on May 31 2025. The miraculous Eucharist, brought to the church in
a solemn procession, was placed in a monstrance for public veneration. Numerous
Bishops, Priests, Religious and Faithful from across Kerala were present to
witness this historic event, which will forever be etched in the history of
Indian Christianity.<o:p></o:p>

An ordained priest of the Catholic Diocese

through various leadership positions including Vice-Principal, Secretary to the

Rev. Dr Cheruvil brings to his new role a
robust academic and professional background. He holds a Ph.D. in Management
from Christ University, Bengaluru, and has earned an MHA from St. John’s

Fr. Benny Edayath (Sebastian), from
Thirumeni, Kannur District, Kerala, is a priest of the Diocese of Bathery,
ordained in December 2003. Over the past 22 years, experience has been gained
in various pastoral, social, and spiritual ministries of the Church.<o:p></o:p>

Served as Executive Director of Shreyas,
the official social service organization of the Diocese of Bathery, for six
years. Also held positions such as Chancellor of the Diocese, Director of the
Catechism Department, Director of the Family Apostolate, and Vicar of 26
parishes, including the Cathedral Church.<o:p></o:p>

Educational qualifications include a
Postgraduate degree in Social Work from St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri,
Calicut, and an LL.B. from Government Law College, Calicut. Legal practice was

has appointed Fr. R. Jesudass as the Executive Director of Caritas India. &nbsp;Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India
(CBCI) officially confirmed the appointment during its 149th Standing Committee
meeting.

Fr. Jesudass was born on April 16, 1976, in
Visuvasamapatti, a village under Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He completed his
early education at Little Flower Primary School, Pallikonda, St. Mary’s High
School, Harur, and Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Salem. He pursued
higher education at St. Joseph’s Arts and Science College, Cuddalore, and
received his priestly formation at St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore,
and Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamallee. He was ordained in 2004 for the Diocese
of Dharmapuri.

Fr. Jesudass holds academic degrees in
Social Work (MSW), English Literature (MA), Education (B.Ed.), and Commerce
(B.Com.), equipping him with a broad perspective on social issues and
development.

Throughout his ministry, Fr. Jesudass has
served in various capacities in education, pastoral care, and social
development. He was Principal of Don Bosco Matric Higher Secondary Schools in
Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. From 2018 to 2023, he was Director of the
Dharmapuri Social Service Society (DSSS).

Recognized by Caritas India as a

Fr Ajith B. Menezes Appointed Associate Director of St. John’s Medical College and Research Institute

New Delhi, May 30, 2025 CBCI: The Synod of
the Syro-Malankara Major Archepiscopal Church has officially accepted the
resignation of Bishop Joshua Mar Ignathios Kizhakkeveettil from the pastoral
care of the Eparchy of Mavelikara. In his place, Bishop Mathews Mar Polycarpos
Manakkarakavil has been appointed as the new bishop of Mavelikara.<o:p></o:p>

Bishop Mathews Mar Polycarpos, who
previously served as auxiliary bishop of the Archeparchy of Trivandrum and held
the titular see of Canatha, will now assume full pastoral leadership of the
Mavelikara Eparchy.<o:p></o:p>

Born on November 10, 1955, Bishop
Polycarpos received his initial formation at St. Aloysius Minor Seminary in
Trivandrum and continued his theological studies at St. Thomas Apostolic
Seminary in Vadavathoor. He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1982.<o:p></o:p>

An academic by background, Bishop
Polycarpos studied at several universities in India and at the Institut
Catholique de Paris. He holds a doctorate in literature from Manonmaniam
Sundaranar University (2010). Over the years, he has served in various roles
including lecturer and head of Mar Ivanios College, parish priest in multiple
communities and missions, and as Protosyncellus of the Trivandrum archeparchy.<o:p></o:p>

He was elected auxiliary bishop of
Trivandrum and titular bishop of Canatha on May 7, 2022, and received episcopal
ordination on July 15 of the same year.<o:p></o:p>

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Reverend Sister Tiziana Merletti, F.S.P., as the new
Secretary of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the
Societies of Apostolic Life. A respected canon lawyer and former Superior
General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, Sr. Merletti brings a profound
depth of experience in religious life and Church law to the role.<o:p></o:p>

Born on 30 September 1959 in Pineto,
Teramo, Italy, Sr. Merletti made her first religious vows in 1986. She holds a
degree in jurisprudence from the then Libera Università Abruzzese degli Studi
“Gabriele d’Annunzio” (1984), and a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical
Lateran University in Rome (1992).<o:p></o:p>

From 2004 to 2013, she served as Superior
General of her religious institute. She currently lectures at the Faculty of
Canon Law at the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome and serves as a canon
law consultant for the International Union of Superiors General.<o:p></o:p>

As a ceasefire between India and Pakistan
over the Kashmir region continues to hold, the Archbishop Emeritus of Bombay
has appealed to both sides to find a full and definitive agreement.<o:p></o:p>

Tensions soared recently after militants
carried out a terrorist attack in Kashmir on April 22, killing 26 civilians.<o:p></o:p>

Both sides launched retaliatory attacks for
four days until a ceasefire was agreed on May 10.<o:p></o:p>

Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff released an image of the new Ring of the
Fisherman, which will be given to Pope Leo XIV during his Mass of Inauguration
on May 18.<o:p></o:p>

Bearing an image of St. Peter, the ring has
New Testament roots and significance. In the Gospel of Matthew (16:19), St.
Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and in the Gospel of Luke
22:32, Jesus tells Peter he must strengthen his brothers in the faith and
mission.<o:p></o:p>

The Ring of the Fisherman thus
authenticates the faith and symbolizes the duty with which the first Pope was
entrusted.<o:p></o:p>

As Peter is known as the fisherman Apostle,
the ring is referred to as the Ring of the Fisherman, or the Piscatory Ring,
symbolizing the continuous lineage from the first Pope to today.<o:p></o:p>

This ring has been part of the symbols of
the papacy since at least the 13th&nbsp;century. It was used as a signet ring
to seal official documents signed by the Pope until 1842. Now, it is used
symbolically, but every Pope still has a ring.<o:p></o:p>

When the Pope dies, his Ring of the
Fisherman, along with the Lead Seal, is marked with a chisel, thereby ensuring
the seal cannot be forged. Therefore, every ring is unique and personal to each
Pope.<o:p></o:p>

In 2013, Pope Francis received a
gold-plated silver ring, which was previously owned by the secretary to Pope
Paul VI. His predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, had a gold ring engraved with a
bas-relief of St. Peter fishing from a boat.<o:p></o:p>

of the Ring of the Fisherman, with an image of St. Peter with the keys and the

New Delhi, May 17, 2025, CBCI: The
celebration marking the official beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate on May
18 is a solemn liturgy. The rite highlights the bond with the Apostle Peter and
his martyrdom, which nurtured the nascent Church of Rome, and the significance
of the “Petrine” episcopal insignia conferred upon the Pope: the Pallium and
the Ring of the Fisherman.<o:p></o:p>

With the Eucharistic celebration taking
place on 18 May at 10:00 AM (CET), 13.30 (IST) in St. Peter’s Basilica and
Square, the Bishop of Rome, Leo XIV, solemnly begins his Petrine Ministry as
the successor of the Apostle Peter and, therefore, as Pastor of the Catholic
Church. As explained by the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the
Supreme Pontiff, the rite&nbsp;features several moments of profound symbolic
meaning, including those regarding the ancient episcopal insignia associated
with Peter: the Pallium and the Ring of the Fisherman.<o:p></o:p>

The Pallium<o:p></o:p>

The Pallium is a liturgical vestment made
from the wool of lambs. It evokes the image of the Good Shepherd who lays the
lost sheep on his shoulders, and recalls Peter’s threefold response to the
Risen Lord’s call to tend His lambs and sheep. As Simeon of Thessalonica writes
in&nbsp;De sacris ordinationibus, the Pallium “represents the Savior
who, encountering us like the lost sheep, lifts us onto His shoulders; by
assuming our human nature in the Incarnation, He divinized it, offered us to
the Father through His death on the Cross, and exalted us through the
Resurrection.” It is a narrow band worn over the chasuble, draped around the
shoulders. It features two black pendants (front and back), six black silk
crosses—one on each pendant and four on the circular band over the
shoulders—and is adorned on the front and on the back with three pins (aciculae),
symbolising the three nails of Christ’s crucifixion.<o:p></o:p>

The Ring of the Fisherman<o:p></o:p>

The Ring of the Fisherman has the specific
significance of a signet ring, representing the seal of faith entrusted to
Peter to strengthen his brethren. It is called the “Ring of the Fisherman”
because Peter, having believed in Jesus' word, drew the nets ashore from the
boat in the miraculous catch of fish.<o:p></o:p>

At the tomb of Saint Peter<o:p></o:p>

The liturgy begins inside St. Peter’s
Basilica. Accompanied by the Patriarchs of the Eastern Churches, the new Roman
Pontiff descends to the chapel of the Tomb of Saint Peter, where he pauses in
prayer and then incenses the site. This moment underscores the deep connection
between the Bishop of Rome and the Apostle Peter, who, together with many other
Christians, bore witness to the faith with his blood close to that very place.<o:p></o:p>

Two deacons then take the Pallium, the Ring
of the Fisherman, and the Book of the Gospels and proceed in procession toward
the altar set up on the area in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Square.<o:p></o:p>

On the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica<o:p></o:p>

Pope Leo XIV joins the procession while
the&nbsp;Laudes Regiae—a litany hymn—are sung, invoking the intercession
of holy Pontiffs, martyrs, and saints of the Roman Church. Hanging from the
central gate of the Basilica is a tapestry depicting the miraculous catch of
fish, portraying the dialogue between Jesus and Peter—a central theme in the
Liturgy of the Word and throughout the celebration. It is a reproduction of the
Flemish tapestry originally made for the Sistine Chapel based on a cartoon by
Raphael, now housed in the Vatican Museums.<o:p></o:p>

Near the altar is the image of Our Lady of
Good Counsel from the Marian Shrine of Genazzano.<o:p></o:p>

The rite continues with the blessing and
sprinkling of holy water, as it is a Sunday in the Easter season. This is
followed by the singing of the&nbsp;Gloria&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Collect,
which recalls the Father’s plan to build His Church upon Peter.<o:p></o:p>

Liturgy of the Word<o:p></o:p>

The Liturgy of the Word then begins. The
First Reading, proclaimed in Spanish, is from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts
4:8–12), in which Peter proclaims Christ as “the stone rejected by the
builders.” The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 117 [118]), proclaimed in Italian,
continues the imagery of the “stone”: “The stone rejected by the builders has
become the cornerstone.”<o:p></o:p>

The Second Reading, also in Spanish, from
the First Letter of Peter (1 Pt 5:1–5, 10–11), underscores the connection
between Peter, the Church of Rome, and the ministry of his Successor.<o:p></o:p>

The Gospel, a passage from John (Jn
21:15–19), proclaimed in Latin and Greek, recounts Jesus’ threefold question to
Peter to “feed My lambs” and “tend My sheep”—one of the foundational texts for
Peter’s unique role among the Twelve Apostles.<o:p></o:p>

Conferral of the Petrine Episcopal Insignia<o:p></o:p>

Following the proclamation of the Gospel,
three Cardinals from the three orders (deacons, priests, bishops), each
representing a different continent, approach Leo XIV. The first places the
Pallium upon him; the second offers a special prayer for the Lord’s presence
and assistance upon the Pope.<o:p></o:p>

The third likewise prays, invoking Christ,
“Shepherd and Bishop of our souls,”—who built the Church upon the rock of Peter
and was recognized by him as “the Son of the Living God,” —asking Him to bestow
the Ring of the Fisherman upon the new Pope, before presenting Leo XIV with the
ring.<o:p></o:p>

The moment concludes with a prayer to the
Holy Spirit, asking that He endow the new Pope with strength and gentleness in
preserving Christ’s disciples in the unity of communion. The Pope then blesses
the assembly with the Book of the Gospels as the acclamation “Ad multos annos!”
(“Many years!”) is proclaimed in Greek.<o:p></o:p>

The rite of Obedience<o:p></o:p>

The symbolic rite of obedience follows, in
which twelve representatives from all the different categories of the People of
God, from all over the world, pledge their obedience to the Pope. The
celebration continues with the homily of the Holy Father.<o:p></o:p>

Afterwards, the “Creed” is sung, followed
by the Universal Prayer or Prayer of the Faithful, with intercessions in
Portuguese, French, Arabic, Polish, and Chinese. Prayers are offered for the
universal Church, for the Roman Pontiff at the beginning of his ministry, for
those in positions of civil authority, for all who suffer or are in distress,
and for the gathered assembly.<o:p></o:p>

Liturgy of the Eucharist<o:p></o:p>

As the Offertory chant “Tu es pastor
ovium” (“You are the Shepherd of the sheep”) is sung, the prayer over the
offerings of bread and wine asks that, through the Church’s missionary
ministry, the fruits of redemption may reach all the earth. Pope Leo XIV then
prays the First Eucharistic Prayer (the Roman Canon), followed by the Communion
Rite. At its conclusion, the Pope prays that God may confirm the Church in
unity and charity and grant that he himself may be saved and protected, along
with the flock entrusted to his care.<o:p></o:p>

Concluding Rites<o:p></o:p>

Before the celebration ends, the Pope
offers a brief address. After the singing of the&nbsp;Regina Caeli, he
imparts the solemn blessing imbued with the biblical imagery of the vine and
vineyard applied to the Church. He prays that the Lord may “look upon” and
“protect” the vine He has planted, and asks that His face of salvation may
“shine” upon all.<o:p></o:p>

welcomed Eastern Catholics from the 23 sui iuris Churches to the Vatican on the
occasion of the Jubilee of Eastern Churches, marking one of the first major
encounters of his pontificate.<o:p></o:p>

Greeting them with the traditional Easter
acclamation, “Christ is risen! He is truly risen!” the Pope expressed
joy at meeting the faithful from the diverse Eastern rites and emphasized their
vital role within the universal Church.<o:p></o:p>

“You are precious in God’s eyes,” he said,
acknowledging the deep historical roots, spiritual richness, and ongoing
struggles of many Eastern Catholic communities. “Looking at you, I think of the
diversity of your origins, your glorious history, and the bitter sufferings
that many of your communities have endured or continue to endure.”<o:p></o:p>

Quoting Pope Francis, Pope Leo reaffirmed
the Church’s commitment to cherishing the Eastern traditions for their unique
insights into Christian life, synodality, and liturgy. He also cited previous
Popes, including Leo XIII and St. John Paul II, in emphasizing the importance
of preserving the liturgical and spiritual heritage of the Eastern Churches.<o:p></o:p>

The Pope voiced concern for Eastern

labor in all its forms. During an informal interactive dialogue at the United
Nations titled “On Childhood With Dignity”, the Permanent Observer of
the Holy See, Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, called for urgent global action to
protect children from exploitation.<o:p></o:p>

Quoting Pope Leo XIII’s 1891 encyclical Rerum
Novarum, Archbishop Caccia said, “Just as very rough weather destroys
the buds of spring, so does too early an experience of life’s hard toil blight
the young promise of a child’s faculties, and render any true education
impossible.” The reference highlighted the enduring relevance of the
Church’s teachings on human dignity and labor.<o:p></o:p>

The dialogue, held in New York on May 13,
focused on ending all forms of child labor, including forced recruitment and
the use of children in armed conflict. Archbishop Caccia emphasized the moral
urgency of the issue, noting that “one in ten of the world’s children is
still trapped in exploitative situations.”<o:p></o:p>

The address also reflected Pope Leo XIV’s
continuity with his namesake’s legacy, as Rerum Novarum served as a
foundational text for Catholic social teaching and inspired the newly elected
Pope’s choice of name. The Holy See’s intervention called on the international
